小传
威廉·麦克尼尔，1917年10月31日生于加拿大温哥华，其父是教育家、神学家John T. McNeill。
他就读美国芝加哥大学，1938年获得学士学位Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) ，次年获得硕士学位Master of Arts (M.A.) 。1947年，在康奈尔大学获得博士学位PhD.。之后，一直在芝加哥大学任教。
他最受欢迎的著作，是早期作品《西方的兴起》（The Rise of the West: A History of the Human Community ）(University of Chicago Press, 1963)。此书以不同文明之间的相互影响为主线来书写世界史，尤其强调了西方文明在最近五百年里对其他地方的冲击。此书的观念对历史研究有很大影响，由此，历史学家开始更加重视文化的融合。
在其漫长的学术生涯中，麦克尼尔发表了许多种产生深远影响的经典作品，其中包括《世界史》、《瘟疫与人》、《权力竞逐》等。曾获美国国家图书大奖，伊拉斯谟奖，国家人文勋章等各类奖项。
2006年，麦克尼尔从芝加哥大学退休，现定居加拿大。
最新作品是与其子约翰·麦克尼尔合著的《人类之网》（中译本，北京大学出版社，2011），对世界史提出了一种全新的解读思路。

前任美国世界史学会主席的凯文·雷利教授在1986年说，世界历史作为一场运动或是一个研究领域的兴起，人们会异口同声地把它归功于威廉·麦克尼尔。
时至21世纪，《新全球史》的作者、夏威夷大学的杰里·本特利教授仍然这样评价：世界历史的真正开始书写，除了韦尔斯那一类通俗作品之外，专业历史学家只是在1960年代以后才开始留心这项研究工作，吃螃蟹的人有马歇尔·霍奇森、斯塔夫里阿诺斯，而关键的奠基人是威廉·麦克尼尔。
2010年2月，美国总统奥巴马在白宫为威廉·麦克尼尔颁发国家人文勋章，以表彰其在文史研究方面做出的卓越贡献。
