她的重要奇幻作品《地海传说》系列，一举奠定她在西方奇幻文学上的经典地位。
《地海传奇》六部曲横跨三十余载，此作品常与另两部西方奇幻经典——托尔金的《魔戒三部曲》与刘易斯的《纳尼亚年代记》相提并论，后两者皆为美国两大科幻奖项雨果奖与星云奖双料得主。
生平
勒瑰恩出身学术家庭，父亲是人类学家，母亲是心理学家及作家，三位兄长都成为学者，均非常关注美国原住民文化。家中时常高朋满座，除了知名学者、研究生之外，还有许多印第安人，套句勒瑰恩母亲说的话，他们家就是「一整个世界」。在这样富有学术气氛的环境成长，勒瑰恩年纪轻轻即开始写作，在11岁时便已向Magazine，Astounding Science Fiction 投稿，虽然不幸被退稿。1951年于哈佛大学的雷地克里夫学院取得学士学位，1952年于哥伦比亚大学取得硕士学位，并在大学任教。
她早期的作品并非科幻或奇幻小说，而是根基于真实事界的虚构国度(Fictional Country)。大部分这些小说在当时都没有被出版，但后来以合集方式收录于Orsinian Tales 与Malafrena中。因为不受出版商青睐，她转而尝试她早期较感兴趣的科幻小说，在1960年代渐渐写出名声。1969年《黑暗的左手》出版，获颁雨果奖与星云奖，同时奠定她在文坛的地位。
2017年，凭借《文字是我的事业：关于生命与书》获得第75届雨果奖最佳相关作品奖。
文风
勒瑰恩的小说最有特色的是她对社会学与人类学的关怀。在勒瑰恩的科幻作品中，她经常架空出一个相当真实但又与地球不相似的世界，与相当人性化的族群，并以这些完全迥异于地球的文化流畅地带出她的主题。
她作品为分析对象的文学评论众多，甚至出版专书探讨。举凡《地海传说》的成长主题与道家思想、《黑暗的左手》的叙事方式与性别议题、《一无所有》的乌托邦与反乌托邦等等，皆对主流文学界产生重大影响。
勒瑰恩除了创作，更投入老子《道德经》的英译注解工作，耗时四十年之久，此版本推出之后获得相当高的评价。她将老子思想融入创作，在一向以西方文明为骨干的奇幻、科幻小说中，发挥东方哲学的无为、相生与均衡概念。此外，《地海传说》中的岛屿世界（相对于欧美的大陆世界）与骨架纤细、黑发深肤的民族（相对于西方人种的外貌），以及隐喻西方文明的侵略与破坏性格，这种「去西方中心」的叙述观点与一般西洋奇幻文学形成强烈对比。
