“高中时我写了一个推理故事，算是家庭作业。故事的名字是《完美的谋杀》。主人公的名字叫McEvoy,后来写《诗人》时我也用了这个名字。16岁时我目睹过一桩犯罪，由此激发了我对犯罪小说和推理故事的兴趣。”
康奈利在弗罗里达大学学习写作时，他的老师是作家哈里·克罗斯。
真实事件通常是康奈利的灵感源泉。《血型拼图》的故事得自康奈利的一个朋友的经历，他的这位朋友通过外科移植手术活了下来，但却总有一种罪恶感，因为知道正是别人的死成就了他的生。这部小说被改编成同名电影，演员阵容包括克林特·伊斯特伍德、安吉里卡·休斯顿等。
